3 tips to keep babies and toddlers safe in the Florida heat this summer

Summer in Florida brings plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun, but high temperatures and strong sun can increase risks for babies and toddlers. But a few simple precautions can help little ones stay safe, healthy, and comfortable during the hottest months of the year.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies can overheat more quickly than adults because their bodies are still developing the ability to regulate temperature efficiently. Experts recommend limiting outdoor time during peak heat hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and taking frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas.

Hydration is also especially important during the summer months. Breast milk or formula helps infants stay hydrated, particularly when spending time outdoors. Families should watch for signs of overheating or dehydration, including fussiness, flushed skin, unusual sleepiness, or fewer wet diapers.

Sun protection is another key part of summer safety. The AAP and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommend keeping babies younger than six months out of direct sunlight whenever possible. Lightweight clothing, wide-brimmed hats, stroller canopies, and shaded areas offer important protection for sensitive skin. For older babies and toddlers, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher can help reduce the risk of sunburn.

Families do not have to navigate early childhood alone. Okeechobee Healthy Start Coalition offers supportive programs for expecting parents and families with children under age three, including the Home Visitation Program. These services connect families with education, resources, and personalized support that help children thrive from the very beginning. Families interested in learning more are encouraged to contact the coalition and enroll today.
