Postpartum Mental Health Matters, and We’re Here to Help

May marks Maternal Mental Health Month, an opportunity to recognize the evolving needs of mothers in the postpartum period. As families adjust to life with a new baby, emotional well-being plays a vital role in building a healthy, confident foundation for both mother and child.

At Okeechobee Healthy Start Coalition, we cultivate personalized support pathways that are rooted in connection, trust, and practical care. We understand that the postpartum experience is different for every mother, and that many need additional support navigating the newborn stage while their own bodies recover from birth.

The journey isn’t always easy: According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 8 women in the United States experience postpartum depression (PPD), a serious condition involving intense, long-lasting sadness or anxiety that can lead to difficulty bonding with the baby, feelings of hopelessness or anger, or even thoughts of suicide. Luckily, PPD is treatable with the right support.

At OHSC, our programs and resources are designed to meet mothers where they are while reinforcing the strengths they bring to their parenting journey.

The monthly Motherhood Unfiltered support group, led by local marriage and family therapist Jessica Lea from Waves of Change, provides a welcoming space for mothers to share experiences, build community, and find encouragement among peers who understand the realities of early motherhood. For those seeking more individualized care, we provide referrals to licensed mental health clinicians, ensuring access to professional guidance tailored to their specific needs.

By enrolling in the in-home visitation program, families receive one-on-one support in a familiar environment, helping parents navigate newborn care, recovery, and daily routines with confidence. Postpartum doulas further strengthen this transition by providing hands-on assistance, attention, and reassurance during the early weeks at home.

Together, these services create a network of support that uplifts mothers and reinforces their ability to thrive. By investing in maternal mental health from day one, we are nurturing stronger families and a more connected Okeechobee community.
