Enabling positive birth experiences with support services close to home

When labor progresses quickly or complications arise, timely access to care matters. In fact, research shows it plays a critical role in healthy outcomes for mothers and babies.

In rural Okeechobee, where the nearest delivery hospital is over 40 miles away, distance from maternity care can have serious implications for both mothers and babies. Research published by Obstetrics & Gynecology links extended travel times with higher rates of perinatal complications and mortality for both mothers and babies. Similarly, a study published in The Journal of Rural Health found that extended travel distance to obstetric services was linked to poorer birth outcomes, particularly when urgent care could not be reached quickly.

Despite these challenges, Okeechobee families are strong, deeply connected, and committed to uplifting one another. With the right support systems in place, these strengths can translate into healthy pregnancies and positive birth experiences, setting families up for success and bolstering the future of our community.

Long-term solutions do not always require building new hospitals closer to home; expanding access can take many forms that meet families where they are. Reliable, no-cost transportation to delivery hospitals ensures that mothers can reach care safely and on time. Maternity waiting homes, where expectant mothers can stay under supervision of trained maternity professionals as their due date approaches, offer another proven strategy to reduce risk while honoring the rhythms of life.

Strengthening prenatal education and care coordination further ensures that families are prepared and supported every step of the way.

Guided by insight from the Okeechobee Maternal Care Task Force – a community-wide initiative bringing together healthcare providers, local government, public safety leaders, and state partners to collaborate on solutions – Healthy Start Coalition of Okeechobee plays a vital role in connecting families to these kinds of services, helping remove barriers and build on the community’s existing strengths.

Strategic investment in transportation, care coordination, and innovative solutions like maternity homes can bridge the distance gap and promote healthy outcomes for mothers, babies, and families across Okeechobee.
