Bridging the Distance to Healthy Beginnings: Why Transportation Matters for Expectant Moms in Okeechobee

In rural communities like Okeechobee, Florida, reliable transportation isn’t just a convenience; it’s a lifeline. With vast distances between homes, clinics, and hospitals that offer prenatal and delivery care, expectant mothers often face journeys of 30 minutes or more simply to access a prenatal visit or to give birth. In rural Florida, more than 86 % of rural hospitals no longer deliver babies, pushing women to drive 30–50 minutes or farther for basic maternity services.

For pregnant people without a car or dependable transit, missed appointments and delayed care are common. It can even lead patients to have to delay seeking initial prenatal care until late in pregnancy or when they suspect a complication, though early and regular care is a key predictor of healthy pregnancies. Research shows that traveling even 20 miles or more for prenatal services is associated with fewer visits overall, increasing the likelihood that complications like high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and fetal growth issues go undetected until they become dangerous.

The consequences are serious: limited access to early prenatal care is strongly linked with higher rates of preterm birth, low birthweight, and maternal complications. Studies also find that in areas with limited maternity care access, women are less likely to receive timely prenatal and postpartum services, and maternal and infant mortality risks rise

This is where philanthropy can catalyze systemic change. Strategic investments can support transportation infrastructure, from community ride programs to subsidized shuttle services, and fund maternal waiting homes that keep expectant mothers near care as they near delivery.

By strengthening rural transport networks, philanthropic partners help ensure that no expectant parent in Okeechobee has to choose between skipping vital care and making an impossible journey. Together, we can ensure healthy starts for babies and families.
